You're Hurt And Your Friend Caused The Injury — Now What?

You might not have expected to be injured the last time you spent time at a friend's house. However, if you're now hurt and your friend was the reason for the injury, your mind may be reeling. Your friendship might be at risk because they refuse to accept any responsibility. What should your next moves be?

Take Photos

Ensure that you have some proof of what took place. In addition to making notes on your own so you can remember various details, snap a few pictures that show your injuries as soon after the incident as you can.

Retain a Lawyer

If you have medical bills and need to miss work, you shouldn't suffer from those costs alone. Retain a lawyer who can take legal action against your friend so that they are held accountable for their actions. A lawsuit might be the best way to get your friend to pay restitution, and a lawyer can ensure you take the appropriate actions without making the situation worse.

Avoid Conversations

After a few days, you might wonder if your friend has had a change of heart and want to contact them. However, a well-meaning intention could lead to a heated argument that upsets you and makes them feel even more resistant to help you. Ensure you keep your lawyer in the loop about all interactions you have.

Avoid Social Media

You may consider that, as the wronged party, you have the freedom to keep posting on social media the way you have been. However, your friend could use posts against you. For instance, if you show pictures of you playing basketball when you claim that you're in pain because of your injuries, that could be used as evidence that you're being untruthful about your claims.

Avoid Gossip

Even when you're speaking to mutual friends, do your best to avoid mentioning the incident where you were injured. Not only do you want to avoid spreading rumors among the people you know, but be mindful that they could relay what you say to the friend who caused the injury. They could even be used as a witness against you, even if they don't mean to do you harm.

Use these pointers as a guide when you've been hurt by someone you know. Your lawyer will have more guidance regarding your behavior going forward; ensure that you consult them to know what you should and shouldn't do as you wait for your lawsuit to conclude.

About Me

The Law Is Blind

Thanks for visiting my fun little blog on the legal system. I'm Jane Campbell. I have always wanted to be a part of the legal profession. I find law fascinating and I read everything I can find about the subject and hope to attend university someday. The only thing that prevented me from pursuing this profession was my social anxiety disorder. While I am in the process of trying to recover from this condition, I've decided to create a blog so I can talk to others about a subject that I hold so dearly. I hope my posts will be useful for you.
