3 Reasons You Should Patent Your Mobile App

Mobile applications are one of the main methods of communication, ordering products and services, and advertising. Most industries are able to operate via a mobile application in some way, which makes them perfect for every business. If you have an original app idea that is in development, you should test it out on the market in a soft launch before the complete launch. But before you get past the development stage, it would be a good idea to patent the mobile application. Here are three reasons why you should patent your mobile app.

1. You produce a result or have a process that is uncommon

Some applications are very similar. In this case, it is best to apply for a trademark on the name and the business rather than a patent. If your application is built to perform a process with a result that is unlike most other apps, you can apply to receive a patent. The sooner you do this, the easier it will be to prove your work, intention, and company purpose. Have a patent attorney go over the app with you and explain to you the process that it will take to patent the project.

2. You want protection against your team leaving mid-project

One of the hardest things to deal with can be founders and mobile developers who leave the project halfway through. One of the problems that can come up is someone leaving attempting to produce an idea based on what they learned from your app. A patent or even the filing of a patent can protect you against this type of action. Once you file for the patent, let it be known that the idea and the project must be under wraps. Having the entire team sign a non-disclosure agreement about the idea itself can also be done through an attorney.

3. You might become a franchise

Depending on the mobile idea, the actual app can become a business that you franchise. If you intend to allow "franchise owners" to utilize the app, a patent is definitely worth the time. This will keep any other companies from completely copying your product or service as a business model. Though you can't stop others from coming up with a similar service idea, you will be able to stop them from utilizing your particular app tools, and you will be able to gain leverage on the market before any other business.

About Me

The Law Is Blind

Thanks for visiting my fun little blog on the legal system. I'm Jane Campbell. I have always wanted to be a part of the legal profession. I find law fascinating and I read everything I can find about the subject and hope to attend university someday. The only thing that prevented me from pursuing this profession was my social anxiety disorder. While I am in the process of trying to recover from this condition, I've decided to create a blog so I can talk to others about a subject that I hold so dearly. I hope my posts will be useful for you.
